Built on an elevated Highland plateau, first scouted by pioneers at the turn of the 20th Century, The Lodge sits high on a ridge overlooking the Tasmanian wilderness. A comfortably paced two hour scenic drive from Hobart, Devonport or Launceston and on the renown Hobart - Strahan touring route, voted “One of Australia’s Top Ten Drives”. We will meet you at any airport or alternately, 20 minutes by helicopter or little longer by light plane, your trip can take in an aerial tour of the Highlands and lakes. Alongside or above, you must follow the diverted course of once wild rivers which now form part of the huge Tasmanian Hydro scheme. Stunning towers and penstocks glisten in the wilderness, marking your route and guiding you to Tarraleah - it was for this that the Estate was first created. At Tarraleah, the walls of wilderness green part for views that encompass river, hills and heavily wooded valleys far below. Mount Wellington looms in the distance. The Aboriginal meaning of ‘Tarraleah’ is “Forestor Kangaroo” and the site is host to an enormous range of Tasmanian flora and fauna. There are some fantastic walks on the Estate and it is quite possible to see platypus, quolls, wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils and echidnas all on the same evening. We have counted over 80 bird species and eagles can be seen soaring as you sit in the stunning cliff top hot tub. Some say the Tasmanian tiger is also about and one of our engaging wilderness guides is credited with the last reputable sighting in Tasmania. This is trout country and there are over thirty lakes and at least six mountain streams to cast your fly within a thirty-minute drive. Within 10 minutes drive, the fish full lakes of Brady and Bronte are small but perfectly formed. Ten minutes walk will take you to Tasmania’s highest golf course or a couple of secret trout holes. Tarraleah is twenty miles from Tasmania’s true geographic centre and two National Parks border on the view. Lake St Clair and Lake King William are close at hand and offer very different scenery. The Lodge is about an hours drive to Lake Gordon and within touring distance of Strahan, Queenstown and the majority of the Highland lakes.
